The Minnesota Twins started out as the Washington Senators before moving to the Twin Cities to begin play in 1961 at renovated Metropolitan Stadium. It didn’t take long for the Twins to forge a unique identity and winning team as with such colorful players as Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, and Zoilo Versailles in the lineup they won then 1965 American League pennant before losing to the LA Dodgers in the Fall Classic. In 1969 a fiery young manager named Billy Martin led the Twins to the American League West division title in the first season of division formats but the Twins fell to powerful and loaded Baltimore in the ALCS. They repeated as division champions in 1970, again losing in the post season to the Orioles. The Twins began to show their age in the early to mid 1970's and could not keep pace with the division rival Oakland A's who were on their way to building a dynasty. Minnesota hit rock bottom in 1982 when they stumbled out of the gate with a 16-54 record en route to a 102-loss season. Although the Twins opened as big time losers in their new home they were beginning to develop impressive young talent such as Kent Hrbek, Gary Gaeitti, Tom Brunansky, Tim Launder and Kirby Puckett that would lead to a baseball renaissance in the Twin Cities.

MacPhail brought in Jeff Reardon as a much needed closer and the Twins became a dominant team in the dome going 56-25 en route the AL West title. As a heavy underdog, Minnesota swept past Detroit in the ALCS and faced the highly touted and favored St. Louis Cardinals in the Fall Classic, defeating them in a thrilling 7 game series. The Twins would return to the post season in 1991 with much of the same core lineup and defeated Toronto in the ALCS. Once again the Twins were prohibitive underdogs in the World Series, this time against Atlanta , but they upset the Braves in a 7-game thriller. Minnesota remained competitive through the early 1990's but Puckett had to retire in '96 because of eye problems. The franchise slipped into the abyss and was almost “contracted” by Major League Baseball. In 2002, however, the Twins began a run of 3 straight division titles!

Did You Know The '''Minnesota Twins''' are an American professional baseball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and play in the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. The team is named after the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. They played in Metropolitan Stadium from 1961 to 1981, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome from 1982 to 2009, and moved into Target Field on December 22, 2009.[http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd20100104&content_id7870938&vkeypr_min&fext.jsp&c_idmin]
One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Washington, D.C. in as the '''Washington Senators'''. In 1905, the team changed its official name to the '''Washington Nationals'''. The name "Nationals" appeared on uniforms for only 2 seasons, and was then replaced with the "W" logo for the next 52 years. The media often shortened the nickname to "Nats". Many fans and newspapers (especially out-of-town papers) persisted in using the "Senators" nickname. Over time, "Nationals" faded as a nickname, and "Senators" became dominant. Baseball guides listed the club's nickname as "Nationals or Senators", acknowledging the dual-nickname situation.
The team name was officially changed to Washington Senators around the time that long-time team president Clark Griffith died and his son Calvin took over the team. It was not until 1959 that the word "Senators" first appeared on team shirts. "Nats" continued to be used by space-saving headline writers, even for the 1961 expansion team, which was never officially known as "Nationals".
In 1960, Major League Baseball granted the city of Minneapolis an expansion team. Calvin Griffith requested that he be allowed to move his team to Minneapolis and instead grant Washington the expansion team. MLB granted his request, and the team moved to Bloomington, Minnesota after the 1960 season, setting up shop in Metropolitan Stadium, while Washington fielded a brand new "Washington Senators" that would also end up moving—to Arlington, Texas to become the Texas Rangers prior to the 1972 season.
Through the 2009 season, the franchise has won 3 World Series Championships (1924, 1987, and 1991) and has fielded 17 American League Batting Champions.
