Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles inaugural season in Baltimore was in 1954 and while they were a flop on the field, they were an immediate success at the gate drawing over one million fans to Memorial Stadium during their maiden voyage. It would take a few more seasons but Baltimore was soon to play host to a baseball powerhouse and several World Series.
The breakout season for Baltimore was 1966 when Hall of Famer Frank Robinson won the American League Most Valuable Player AND the Triple Crown leading the Birds into the World Series, where they swept the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Midway through the 1968 season Earl Weaver took over as manager and the Orioles were ready to fly high. Weaver, armed with a phenomenal starting rotation led by Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar led the Orioles to a smashing 109-53 record. The Orioles swept Minnesota in the ALCS before losing the World Series to the miracle Mets. The 1969 Orioles, however, set a precedent of things to come with their superior pitching, along with an outstanding lineup led by legends such as powerful Boog Powell, and slick fielding third baseman Brooks Robinson, who stole the 1970 World Series with his glove as the Orioles bested the Reds. Palmer, McNally, Cuellar, along with Pat Dobson, EACH won 20 games in that 1970 world championship season! Baltimore's third consecutive World Series appearance ended in defeat to Pittsburgh in 1971, but the Orioles would return to post season in 1973 and 1974, losing the ALCS to Oakland.
A new group of Orioles reemerged as American League champions in 1979 before losing a tough 7-game World Series to Pittsburgh . In 1982 a rookie named Cal Ripken went 3-5 with a homer on opening day and would not miss a game during the next sixteen seasons. Weaver, one of the greatest managers in baseball history, retired at that season's conclusion
