The Tennessee Titans are the new millennium’s reincarnation of the Houston Oilers, which were established in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. During their tenure in Houston, the Oilers began at the top of their game, winning two consecutive AFL league championships (1960 and 1961), and four division titles in the AFL East (1960, 1961, 1962 and 1967). However, their performance seemed to decline for nearly the next quarter century, until they won another division championship in the NFL’s AFC Central in 1991, and then again in 1993. Two years after they moved to Tennessee in 1997, and their name had become the “Tennessee Oilers,” the team landed at the top of the AFC conference in 1999. They changed their name to the “Titans” in 1999 and claimed another division title in the AFC Central in 2000, so it seemed like all the changes agreed with them and they carried their victorious history through to their last playoff triumph as the 2002 division champions of the AFC South.
