The Miami Heat are the current NBA champions, after snatching victory from the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 playoffs. The team plays at home at American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. Established in 1988, the Heat’s early years were relatively unremarkable and they did not post a winning season until the 1993-94 season. By 1996, they finished with a franchise-best record of 61–21 and the team recruited notables like Dan Majerle, P.J. Brown, Jamal Mashburn, and Voshon Lenard. These valuable additions led the team to a conference-best record of 33-17 record in 1998-99; and they went on to claim their first-ever No.1 seed position in the NBA playoffs. Unfortunately, they lost to the Knicks in Game 5 and that decided the series. In 2000-01, Alonzo Mourning returned in the middle of the season, but Miami lost to the Charlotte Hornets in the first round. The next two seasons brought more disappointment for the Heat, when they failed to make playoffs under the direction of legendary coach Pat Riley. Still, the Heat had it in them to come back with a vengeance and, after a few key personnel changes, that’s exactly what they did. Just before the start of 2003-04 season, Riley stepped down as head coach and Stan Van Gundy took the reins. That pivotal move was followed by a favorable trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, which brought the Heat Shaquille O’Neal, considered to be one of the all-time basketball greats. These on- and off-season moves led to the Heat’s second-best record of 59–23. They continued on the streak and won eight consecutive games to reach the Eastern Conference Finals.
