The St. Louis Cardinals have won 10 World Series championships and will be defending their title again in the 2007 MLB season. Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, the Cardinals took their first World Series title in 1926 and they have proved to be consistent and worthy opponents ever since. In 1942, they claimed victory in 106 games, leading them straight to another - their fourth - World Series title. During the next three seasons, the Cardinals made consecutive appearances at the World Series, but the New York Yankees would not let them reclaim the throne in 1943. Although they returned to their former glory by winning a 1946 World Series title, the Cardinals would lay relatively dormant for 21 years before they again claimed the World Series title in 1964. With a 92-70 record in 1982, the Cardinals trounced the Atlanta Braves for the National League Championship Series and eventually beat the Brewers for to take their ninth ever World Series title. 2006 brought the Cardinals a new Busch Stadium, and their 10th World Series title when they beat the Tigers. The Cardinals have won a National League record 10 World Series championships, second only to the New York Yankees (who have 27) in Major League Baseball.
The Cardinals were founded in the American Association in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings, taking the name from an earlier National League team. They joined the National League in 1892 and have been known as the Cardinals since 1900. The Cardinals began play in the current Busch Stadium in 2006, becoming the first team since 1923 (NYY) to win the World Series in their first season in a new ballpark. The Cardinals have a strong rivalry with the Chicago Cubs that began with the 1885 World Series.
